Important Reminder: Avoid Illegal Open Burning

Open burning regulations in North Carolina are strictly enforced, and violations can result in fines of up to $10,000. There are many misconceptions about outdoor burning. While some may believe it is acceptable to burn leaves and yard debris—especially in the fall—this is not permitted in areas where yard waste collection services are available. If your community provides pickup, burning leaves, branches, or similar materials is prohibited. The North Carolina Division of Air Quality (DAQ), under Code 15A NCAC 2D .1903, enforces statewide open burning rules. In addition, many local governments have their own restrictions. Violations can lead to significant penalties, including substantial fines for first-time or minor offenses, and higher fines for repeat or serious violations.
